Multimodal Response 9

I think the case of #GirlsLikeUs is a perfect example which illustrates the power and reach of online communities. Janet Mock, outspoken trans activist, is a driving force and advocate for trans rights. Her online presence as well as general support for notable trans figures or events happening in current events is a testament to the political and social power of online groups and platforms. Mock specifically helped voice support for violence against trans people, and general injustices as well. Janet has been an outspoken supporter for trans rights in cases like Jenna Talackova's, a contestant disqualified from the Miss Universe Pageant. Talackova transitioned from male to female and was disqualified as she was not "naturally born female". The power of Mock's voice is that she gives comfort and aid to those who may feel otherwise. Networks like Twitter help to make this possible as it is an instantaneous feed of news and commentary which can be very effective in responding quickly to situations such as the Miss Universe controversy.

Activism in online spaces is a new phenomenon that is only just beginning. Social media is in its infancy and the impact is already extraordinary. With the press of a button, an individual's idea or message can be shared with millions of people worldwide. This makes this the ultimate weapon or tool, all depending on who is using it. It can also be used to share images or videos of events in real time. This rapid exchange and spread of information has forever revolutionized the way we interact with our world. For my project 3, I hope to create a piece of visual media or artwork that advocates for a certain group or issue.
